American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP)

The Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship

OSU-COM Alumni Association and other donors established this scholarship in 1997. On July 11, 2002 the Executive Board of the Association approved the first time awarding of three scholarships to a second, third and fourth year medical student.

American Medical Association Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship

These $10,000 scholarships reward current third-year medical students, who are entering their fourth-year of study. The selection of the recipients will be based on academic achievement and financial need. Multiple scholarships, funded by the AMA Foundation, the Audio-Digest Foundation, Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund, and the Rock Sleyster, MD Fund will be awarded in 2009. Partial funding for this program is provided by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

  • There will be eight Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships funded by the AMA Foundation.
  • The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Audio-Digest Foundation should have an interest in "the communication of science." Activities such as mentoring and/or teaching are examples of "communication of science."
  • The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund should have an interest in and commitment to a career in medical journalism.
  • The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Rock Sleyster, MD, Fund should have an interest in and commitment to a career in psychiatry.

Each medical school may submit one nomination for each of these scholarship opportunities.

This fund was established through the General Scholarship Fund to provide assistance to students from fundraising activities of the American Medical Association and the American Medical Association Alliance.

William G. Anderson, D.O. Scholarship for Minority Students

This scholarship was established in 1998 to honor the distinguished professional and public career of Dr. Anderson and highlights his life-long commitment to civil rights and osteopathic medicine.

  • Deadline April 24
  • Honors an outstanding minority medical student. For the purpose of this scholarship, a minority is defined as one of African American, Native American, mainland Puerto Rican or of Hispanic ethnic origin
  • Entering second, third or fourth year of medical school in the upcoming academic year
  • Demonstrated both academic achievement and outstanding leadership qualities
  • One scholarship presented to recipient during the AOF Honors Ceremony, which is held annually during the Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition (OMED).

AOA Presidential Memorial Leadership Award

This award was established to recognize the contributions of AOA Past Presidents who have provided numerous years of service to advance the osteopathic profession. The goal of this award is to promote continued leadership within the osteopathic profession.

Auxiliary to the Tulsa Osteopathic Medical Society Scholarship

A.T.O.M.S. has been supporting osteopathic medical education since 1980. As spouses of osteopathic physicians, the Auxiliary recognizes the many sacrifices students and their families face in attaining the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. The Auxiliary is pleased to honor and recognize OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine students by providing one $2,500 scholarship.

Dr. John Barson

Founding President Dr. John Barson Endowed Scholarship

Known for his expertise in developing curricula and residency programs, Dr. Barson was appointed by the State Regents and legislature of Oklahoma in the 1970s to establish a new medical college emphasizing primary care in Tulsa, OK. His tenure and service as Founding President of the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery was unmatched; before he stepped down as President in 1984, the State Regents designated the John Barson Administration Building at the medical campus of Oklahoma State University as a
center for professional studies and biomedical research.

Brighter Orange Endowed Scholarship

This annual scholarship is generously provided by donors to benefit Texas graduates attending OSU Center for Health Sciences.

  • If no such student is eligible the scholarship shall be awarded to a student who has been a Texas resident

Center for Rural Health Endowed Scholarship Fund

This annual scholarship is generously provided by donors to benefit OSU Center for Health Sciences students who have expressed an intent to practice in a rural Oklahoma county.

Requirements

  • Deadline March 1, 2014
  • Enrolled as a full-time medical student at Oklahoma State University
  • Must be a 4th year medical Student at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences
  • Preference shall be given to a student who: has submitted a match for a residency in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics; has participated in the Summer Preceptor Program, Early Clinic Experience in Primary Care and completed the Elective Coursework in Rural Practices, or has completed their third and fourth year at a rural location; and has expressed an intent to practice in a rural county in Oklahoma.

Victoria Conwell Osteopathic Scholarship

Recipient selected by the Tulsa Osteopathic Medical Society (TOMS).

This annual scholarship was established to honor Victoria Conwell and her dedication to the osteopathic profession.  The purpose of this scholarship is to benefit the medical students of OSU Center for Health Sciences.  One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded annually.

This scholarship was established in 2004 by Stillwater National Bank, through the College of Business Administration, to provide scholarship assistance to osteopathic medical students enrolling in the joint D.O./M.B.A. program

Founders’ Leadership Award

This $3,000 scholarship provided by the Osteopathic Founders Foundation will annually recognize, honor, and encourage one osteopathic medical student who exhibits the foundational leadership skills that will serve their profession and their community now and in the future.

  • Rising third year student
  • Enrolled and in good standing in the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Personal statement describing noteworthy accomplishments in student activities which demonstrate the applicant’s ability to be a leader (i.e. Student Government, SOMA, etc.)*
  • Demonstrated excellence in academic achievement (transcript required)
  • Financial Need
  • One faculty letter of recommendation

*The personal statement should demonstrate how the applicant meets the eligibility criteria and upholds the purpose of this award. It should also highlight leadership activities and experiences that add to the individual’s worthiness to receive this award.

Bob E. Jones Endowed Student Scholarship

Established in October 1997, it provided needed financial assistance to Oklahoma osteopathic students in their quest to become a physician. The endowed program honors the memory of Bob E. Jones who was a loyal and effective leader, serving as Executive Director of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association for thirty years, and made significant contributions to the osteopathic profession.

  • Deadline February 1
  • Applicant must be a lawful resident of the United States and one of the following:
    • Non-Independent – student must have at least one parent, stepparent or court-appointed guardian who is an Oklahoma resident and who has claimed the applicant as a dependent on his/her federal income tax return for the previous year
    • Independent – student must have lived in Oklahoma in some capacity other than as a full-time student at a post-secondary institution for at least 12 consecutive months prior to matriculation to medical school
  • Applicant is full-time osteopathic medical student
  • Entering second, third, or fourth year of medical school in the upcoming academic year
  • Preference to applicants who have completed two years of osteopathic medical training and who indicate a desire to practice in Oklahoma
  • Class standing and cumulative grade point average are major determining factors

McCaughan Heritage Scholarship

This scholarship was established in April of 1956 by Russell C. McCaughan, D.O., specifically to provide education scholarships to osteopathic medical students. The AOF's McCaughan Heritage Scholarship honors and recognizes an osteopathic medical student who is committed to the science, art and philosophy of osteopathic medicine early in their career, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic principles, practice, and treatment in patient care.

OEFOM Endowed Student Scholarship

Students must be Oklahoma residents for at least one year prior to medical school and must have one parent who is an Oklahoma Resident. Student must demonstrate good standings in academics, finances and conduct.

Osteopathic Founders Foundation Tribute Scholarships

This foundation provides scholarship assistance to osteopathic medical students at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. These scholarships are presented annually by the Foundation in honor of its Physician of the Year. Two scholarships will be awarded in August 2013 in the amounts of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, to be used during the recipient's fourth year of study.

  • Required class ranking in top 20% of the Class of 2014
  • Applicants will be selected based on:
    • Educational History
    • Involvement in the osteopathic profession
    • Community Service
    • Merit of an essay of not more than 600 words discussing "What is the importance of having an osteopathic teaching hospital affiliated with an osteopathic medical school?"

This annual scholarship is generously provided in honor of Dr. Michael Whitworth, D.O. to benefit the medical students of OSU Center for Health Sciences. Two scholarships of $5000 will be awarded each year.

Requirements

  • Must have minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale
  • Must have minimum MCAT score of 27
  • Must have demonstrated community service
  • The scholarship will be renewed for the second year of medical school if a minimum GPA of 3.5 is maintained during the first year of school

This scholarship was established in 1998 in memory of Martin E. Fate, Jr., (1933-1995), who was deeply involved in the Tulsa Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees, and the foundation. Fate was CEO of Public Service Company of Oklahoma.

The F.L. Reed, D.O. Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of F.L. Reed, D.O., former professor of pediatrics, chairman of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital Board, president of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians, and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, and vice chairman of American Osteopathic Association Committee on Colleges, where he was instrumental in accrediting nine colleges of osteopathic medicine.

Richard A. Hastings, M.D. Scholarship Fund

This annual scholarship is generously provided by Dr. Richard A. Hastings II to benefit the medical students of OSU Center for Health Sciences. One scholarship of $5000 will be awarded each year.

This scholarship was established in 2003 in memory of John D. Sears, D.O., this Fund honors the late Dr. Sears’ contributions to osteopathic medicine and is intended to perpetuate his caring and compassionate approach to the practice of medicine, and commitment to furthering the profession.

Requirements

  • Recipient may receive the award for a period of up to four years, provided he or she remains in good academic standing.

This scholarship was established to honor James S. Seebass and his work as an Osteopathic Physician. It will provide a permanent source of academic enrichment at Oklahoma State University as well as create predictable, growing streams of income in perpetuity that create and sustain university teaching, research and service programs.

This scholarship is generously provided by Southwest Neurological Associates to benefit a rising 4th year student. Educating student doctors in the neurosciences is important given the aging nature of our population and the need for neurological care in Oklahoma.
$1000 will be given annually to one student meeting the criteria below.

Welch Scholars Grant

This grant was originally established in 2001, the Foundation Scholars Grant was renamed the Welch Scholars Grant in October 2002 in honor of Sterling Welch, D.O. for his outstanding generosity to the Foundation and his desire to support osteopathic medical students. American Osteopathic Foundation offers this scholarship to students directly through CHS Scholarship and Awards Program with final recommendations to AOF by Scholarship Selection Committee. Recipients required to attend Scholarship Shootout, Benefactors' Luncheon, and any additional activities as appropriate.

Lew Wentz Foundation

This foundation was established in 1926 by Lew Wentz for student loans. Today, the Lew Wentz Foundation provides OSU’s largest scholarships, based on academic standing with an emphasis on citizenship and leadership. Lew Wentz Foundation Scholars at OSU Center for Health Sciences are the senior-most graduate students enrolled in the DO/PhD program, demonstrating a commitment to scholarship and research.

  • Applicant is enrolled in DO/PhD program
  • Preference given to the most-senior students
  • Demonstrated commitment to scholarship and research
  • Recipient submits year-end report on accomplishments in research
  • Recipient may receive award a maximum of two (2) years
