- Rotation Title: Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Clinical Outpatient and Hospital Rotation
Rotation Length: One Calendar Month
Rotation Format: Clinically based OMM at OSU Health Center and OSU Medical Center
Rotation Level: 3rd Year Osteopathic Medical Students
Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of OMM I-IV at OSU-CHS

- This rotation provides an opportunity to further develop knowledge of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine obtained during the first two years of Osteopathic Medical Education. The rotation incorporates outpatient and inpatient clinical experiences to apply principles and practices. The format is designed to use the problem-oriented approach to the patient in order to help the student understand how to incorporate OMM into the management and treatment of the ten most common musculoskeletal presentations and other common visceral presentations (asthma, emphysema, ileus, nausea and vomiting, etc.) in the outpatient and hospital settings.
- Each student will spend approximately 3 weeks in the clinic and one week in the hospital. During the assigned time at the hospital, the student will be required to provide one weekend of call coverage.
- Each week, students will be given a quiz over study topics given for that week. At the end of the rotation, students will be given an NBOME shelf examination to help determine readiness for board examinations.
- A CPX experience will integrated into the course schedule.
- Rotation Calendar
- The student's actual days and hours are set forth within the rotation calendar. The specific scheduling of days and hours shall be made by the course coordinator, and shall generally conform to the following:
- Rotation Period: The rotation is one calendar month in length, between September 1st of one year to August 31st of the next year.
- Date of Arrival: All rotations begin and end on the first and last day of each calendar month. It is the student's responsibility to report to the course coordinator on the first week-day of the rotation. If there is a reasonable explanation for a delay in reporting (e.g., auto accident, illness, or similar reason), the student must contact the course coordinator immediately.
- Work Day: A typical day is considered to be 9 hours in length (8:00am-5:00pm); however, there may be an occasional instance when the working period may exceed 9 hours.
- Weekends: Weekends are assigned on a rotating basis throughout the month.
- Holidays: Students will receive time off in accordance with OSU-COM policy.

- Course Objectives
- Apply appropriate Osteopathic Principles and Practice for the diagnosis and treatment in the outpatient and hospital setting.
- Demonstrate competency in the following OMM guidelines for the outpatient and hospital patient presentation:
- Ankle and/or Foot Pain
- Knee and Leg Pain
- Hip, Groin and ITB Pain
- Low Back Pain
- Shoulder and Arm Pain
- Elbow, Wrist and Hand Pain
- Neck, Upper Back and Thoracic Outlet Pain
- Midthoracic, Rib and Intercostal Pain
- ICU, Critically Ill or Bedfast
- Ventilator Extubation Assistance
- Ileus, nausea and vomiting
- Non-Cardiac Chest Pain
- COPD and Lower Respiratory Patient
- Demonstrate competency in performing a complete osteopathic structural examination in both the outpatient and hospital setting.
- Exhibit interpersonal skills with patients and their families that facilitates the communication process between physicians and patients:

- Utilize appropriate medical records documentation strategies using the SOAP format.
- Demonstrate an awareness of medical, legal and ethical issues and the ability to respond appropriately to these issues.
- Gain general knowledge and skills in communicating effectively with patients and in presenting patients, both verbally and in writing.
- It is very important that the student develop and practice respectful attitudes toward fellow students, attendings and especially patients. Toward this end, the student should demonstrate:
- Self-assurance and security, tempered with openness and honesty regarding areas where the student is lacking knowledge and skills.
- Willingness to share knowledge and to learn from all other health care professionals.
- Willingness to educate patients to assume responsibility for their own health care.
- Willingness to seek out and hear constructive criticism and to become skilled at self-evaluation.

- Contribute to patient care, recommending modification of the original plan when necessary and recording the patient's progress utilizing SOAP format.
- Because of the unique nature of this rotation, one hundred percent (100%) attendance is required. Students will not be permitted to take vacation or time off during the rotation except as required by college policy (eg. board examination, etc.)
- Students are required to attend all scheduled meetings.
- Student Responsibilities
- The student will be responsible for completing the following activities during the rotation.
- Bringing stethoscope and blood pressure cuff daily.
- Meet with supervising physician at all assigned times.
- Be prepared to discuss their clinical strengths and weaknesses relative to the rotation objectives.
- Complete all outlined rotation objectives as previously listed.
- Meet with the supervising physician for an evaluation/feedback conference at the end of the rotation.
- Dress Code
- Students are expected to wear their identification badge at all times.
- Unless specified differently by the supervising physician, the student will wear a cleaned and pressed white clinical jacket at all times.
- Students are expected to dress appropriately.
- Scrubs may be worn. Otherwise, men are expected to wear a shirt, tie, and dress trousers. Women may wear either slacks or a dress.
- On Friday, jeans (in good repair) may be worn, if the accompanying shirt has an OSU logo.
- Student Evaluation
- 100% attendance is required at all didactic sessions.
- Written Examinations. Students will be given short examinations each week over various topics that will be assigned each week.
- PowerPoint Presentation. In the 3rd week of the rotation, each student will be required to give a 20-minute presentation a topic and how it relates to OMM. Topics will be chosen from the student’s interests and approved by the course coordinator. The presentations will be graded based on content, length, and familiarity with the topic.
- 5% = Attendance
- 25% = Didactic Examinations
- 10% = PowerPoint Presentation
- 10% = Teaching participation
- 50% = Clerkship Performance Evaluation
- Site Evaluation – a grade will not be entered until turned in.
- A grade of less than 70% will result in failure of the rotation.

COMAT Examination Remediation Policy:
Beginning July 2012, if a student does not pass the COMAT Exam, he/she must enter a formal remediation process as described by each course coordinator including entering into a mentorship with a designated faculty member in the department. The designated faculty member will direct the student to review specific topics of weakness as identified by their personalized COMAT Exam score sheet. After remediation, the student will be eligible to retake the COMAT Exam. If the student fails the same COMAT Exam a second time, a letter grade of "I" for incomplete will be assigned and the student will be referred to the Academic Standards Committee for a plan of corrective action.
