Curriculum by Year
Our osteopathic curriculum includes:
- Hands-on clinical experiences
- Student-centered and problem-based methods of instruction
- Frequent consultation with faculty members and community-based physicians
- Problem-solving and information-retrieval skills - emphasized in order to produce osteopathic physicians with the capacity to be life-long learners
- Spiral curriculum - study matter continuously reintroduced in greater depth and complexity to reinforce prior learning and promote meaningful retention
- Integration of basic sciences with clinical & behavioral sciences - to permit full comprehension of the clinician’s work and promote a holistic approach to the care of patients and their families
- A twenty-two month clerkship program within the four-year program of professional education.

The first year includes:
- Bringing all students to desired levels of competence in the biomedical sciences and preliminary clinical knowledge and skills
- Learning the terminology of medicine
- Knowledge for problem solving
- Acquiring core concepts in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology
- Developing competence in osteopathic clinical skills including physical examination, diagnosis and patient interviewing
- Recognition of normal and abnormal patterns of physical conditions and diseases.
- Introduction to medical resources including telecommunications technologies to enhance their learning experiences.

The second year includes:
- Emphasis on case-based learning and clinical problem-solving strategies
- Recognition and understanding of common diseases and conditions frequently seen in primary care settings
- Small-group learning and independent study - key to students’ development of the critical thinking for the clinical context
- Honing of clinical skills through interactive lab sessions and simulated clinical experiences
- Using behavioral science courses to provide students with an appreciation of the importance of preventative medicine, cultural sensitivity and mental health issues

The Third and Fourth Year include:
- Clinically oriented and community based clerkship experiences in hospitals and clinics observing patients on a daily basis under physician-faculty supervision.
- Supervised patient contact in small towns and rural areas throughout Oklahoma
- At least one month at each of several locations including a community hospital, family medicine clinic, rural and urban family practice, and elective locations
- Skills in patient management
- Understanding of individual body functions
- Experience in actual health care delivery under conditions similar to those in which primary care physicians practice
